Seiner Helicopter Used In Evacuation After Storm

Due to tropical storm ‘Hernán’, 30 passengers of AeroMexico were stranded at the Playa de Oro airport in Manzanillo, Mexico. A helicopter from one of the purse seiners of the fishing and processing tuna company GrupoMar was used to airlift these people. The four-hour rescue was coordinated by the aeronautical authority. Also, airport personnel assisted in the evacuation of the passengers to safe areas such as the tuna company’s private heliport.

The helicopter has the capacity to carry four people and normally sails on board large purse seiners to assist in locating tuna schools. The pilots are trained to fly in all weather conditions and have the skills to navigate in difficult situations like a tropical storm.
